After The Lifeway, we received some criticism about the excessive use of piano in our productions. Since piano was merlucin's instrument, we decided to pay much more attention to the music this time.

Deekay introduced us to Pinza, a musician from Finland. We had briefly crossed paths during the development of Reborn with Trace, and met again at BCN Party. We showed him the demo, and after watching it, he insisted on adding more grime, dirt and textures everywhere, especially in the title sequence. We liked the idea!

Pinza ended up composing the entire soundtrack for Die Änderung. This collaboration was the beginning of a longer relationship, as he eventually joined Spöntz after this production.

After this demo, xphere joined the group and made major improvements to the Spöntz engine. That's why the final version of the demo features a dedicated credit for him, which wasn't present in the version shown at the competition. The credit itself was created by merlucin, so it looks a little different from the ones designed by Trace.

Meanwhile, Madgoblin was going crazy with LightWave, modelling all sorts of mysterious objects. merlucin and kolian were busy expanding the scripting system with new sections that could call and repeat other sections, all synchronised to the music.

Unfortunately, kolian was slowly losing interest in the demoscene. merlucin would often show him the latest improvements to the demo, but it wasn't enough to keep him engaged. After this production, his contributions gradually became smaller, although merlucin continued to include him in the credits for many more demos, as he was the original creator of the graphics engine.

merlucin travelled to Mexico while working on the demo, and some of the photos he took, including one of a scorpion and another of a stained-glass window, eventually made their way into the production.

Die Änderung was nominated for the Breakthrough Performance Scene Awards 2003, although the award eventually went to Project Genesis, a fantastic 64K production by Conspiracy.
