Hepilektic

This was our very first production! Iit was pretty cool to meet other people who were also making demos and discover that there was this whole world going on around us. Turns out we weren't the only weirdos messing around with computers!

This demo was almost entirely coded by Kolian in his spare time. It was also what got merlucin started with OpenGL. They had met at work and had been talking about making a demoscene production together for quite a while. Then, one day, Kolian showed up with some code and a handful of rotating 3D objects and gave merlucin a little preview of what he had been cooking.

The next party in Barcelona was FiberParty 2002, so we decided to give it a go and put together a production just for the hell of it. That production was Hepilektic.

There was no scripting engine or fancy system behind this demo. Everything was hardcoded, which meant pretty much none of the code made it into later productions. The only survivor was the core engine, the bit responsible for putting the scenes on screen, which was later reused in Spontz Goes to Dixieland.

At the party, we met people like Silenci, Xphere and Trace, who made the whole experience even more fun. They eventually became part of Spontz too. Back then, there was actually a dedicated "demoscene area" where all the sceners hung out together. Imagine that, people actually meeting in person instead of arguing on the internet.

And the name? It's not entirely random. merlucin was dealing with epilepsy at the time, and the stress of racing against the deadline certainly wasn't helping. So, naturally, we ended up calling it Hepilektic. Subtlety was never really our thing.
